First McEwen to Fly V now Tasmanian Wurf to Liquigas. Hope you are all keeping track.
Former rower Cameron Wurf has signed with Liquigas, a definite step up in his career. On the other side of the ladder of life we have Robbie McEwen climbing down to hopeful ProTour starters Fly V. What with Contador moving to Saxo Bank, Cervelo dissolving and the Schlecks starting up under their own banner 2011 will have a new flavour indeed.

Australia's Cameron Wurf will leave Androni Giocattoli-Diquigiovanni for the Liquigas-Doimo team in 2011, Cyclingnews learned today. The 27-year-old signed a one-year contract with the ProTour squad today.
At the Vuelta a España, team director Mario Scirea confirmed the signing of Wurf, a former rower who represented Australia at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and switched to cycling in 2006.

David Tanner leaves Fly V for Saxo Bank, joins Porte and Contador but will miss Schlecks, Stuart 'All-nighter' O'Grady
Those revolving doors are doing the job again... and once again Riis will have a formidable squad - and perhaps just a bit younger and more developmental at that.

Fly V loses David Tanner to Bjarne Riis's Saxo Bank/Sungard team
While Saxo Bank will be losing a small army of its best riders to Team Luxembourg in 2011, it continues to have a strong hold on the young talent from Australia. 25 year old David Tanner will make the jump from the Continental ranks to the ProTour next season. A solid year with Fly V Australia, which has included stage wins at two of North America's hardest stage races, the Tour de Beauce and the Tour of Utah, has caught the eye of the ever watchful Bjarne Riis.Fly V loses David Tanner to Bjarne Riis's Saxo Bank/Sungard team
Tanner has had a circuitous rise to the top level of the sport. The Australian spent his U23 years putting together solid results in Europe with such great French development teams as VC Roubaix and VC La Pomme Marseille to such an extent that a stagiaire ride with the South African Barloworld team was his just reward at the end of 2008. The testing time was a short one and didn't amount to a contract, though he did manage a stellar 5th place result at the 1.1 GP Citta Camaiore. Instead of a hoped for debut season in Europe in 2009, he headed to America to race with a squad with a lot of hype and hope but only the tiniest amount of follow through: Rock Racing. After spending a quiet year with Rock, Tanner finally got a decent opportunity when he signed a contract with the rapidly upward moving Fly V Australia team. A solid season later, and he's now headed back to Europe to pick up where he left off in 2008.Fly V team loses Tanner to Saxo Bank | Latest News | Cycling Weekly
Fly V Australia suffered a setback in its bid for a first division, ProTour licence today. Bjarne Riis announced his Saxo Bank team agreed to a two-year contract with Fly V's Australian, David Tanner.
"Saxo Bank-SunGard is basically a good fit for him," said Riis in a press release, "and I'm looking forward to taking part in developing his big talent."
Riis and Sports Director Brad McGee helped developed Australian Richie Porte's talent this year. Porte won the Tour of Romandy time trial in April, which led way to his breakthrough at the Giro d'Italia. In Italy, first-year professional Porte held the leader's pink jersey for three days, won the young riders classification and finished seventh overall behind Ivan Basso.

Matthews edges closer to shoe-pulling Phinney in Tour De L'Avenir. New cleats please!
Used to be quite easy to pull a shoe off the pedal, especially if you didn't tighten the straps just before the sprint. And then the early Look system made it even easier, boasting neither straps nor a metal clip or 'cage' to restrain sideways movement. But tighter springs and other design changes have made inadvertant foot removal hard again - until Taylor Phinney proved otherwise. New cleats needed?

A talented young gun of Australian cycling, Michael Matthews burst onto the nation's cycling scene in 2006 when he won the U17 Road Championships after just six months' training. In 2008 he took out the title of Australian Junior Male Cyclist of the Year. His good form continues, with Matthews recently finishing third in the U23-men's time trial race at the Australian Open Road Cycling Championships held on January 6 2010.Cycling star Michael Matthews chases riches - Local News - Geelong, VIC, Australia
MICHAEL Matthews has been tipped to join the lucrative ProTour and further live-up to his nickname 'Bling' as early as next year.
The 19-year-old road cyclist has also been touted as Australia's leading medal chance in the under-23 road race and particularly the time trial at the 2010 world championships in Geelong.

Cam Meyer on breaking away during the 2010 Giro. Includes power peaks and averages
Nothing really new here - if you've ever ridden in a bike race and gone with a break then you'll know what it feels like to sprint for that escape before it gets away and then settle into constantly doing turns whilst 'on the rivet'. Being in a Grand Tour just ramps up every aspect of the achievement. By a long way, too.

Garmin-Transitions' fancied young Australian rider Cameron Meyer found himself in that position during stage 13 of this year's Giro d'Italia and with his team publishing the 22-year-old's ride data for that day on the Garmin website, it makes the task of analysing the demands of a big break much easier.Cameron Meyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The day in question took riders on a 223km journey from Porto Recanti to Marco Pantani's home town of Cesenatico, on Italy's eastern coastline. Local hero Manuel Belletti of the Colnago-CSF team won the day but before he could celebrate an emotional victory there was about 170km of breakaway riding to be done.
Cameron Meyer (born 11 January 1988 in West Preston, Melbourne) is an Australian professional racing cyclist, riding for UCI ProTour team Garmin-Transitions. Cantwell takes last spint, Fly V Australia the 2010 US NRC team prize. Achievement ignored in Oz of course
It doesn't matter who wins what or where, cycling remains almost invisible in the pages and on the screens of Australia's old media. It gets a run in the Olympics, at the Commonwealth Games and during le Tour, sure, but most of the time the old media are focused on "footy", cricket or a small number of athletes swimming backward and forward in a pool. Whilst the Aussie junior cyclists were recently winning big on the world stage we were instead "treated" to some local fish winning in a small pond. No offence to the swimmers themselves but the media miss the bigger stories time and again - be it netball or cycling, if it doesn't register with the old guard then it gets ignored. OK, rant over.
Instead let's hope that the Fly V team can leverage their local and US success into a big - and well reported - 2011 season.

Fly V Australia sprinter Jonathan Cantwell put a stamp on his team's overall victory of the National Racing Calendar (NRC) series by winning the last round at the Chris Thater Memorial held on Sunday in Binghamton, New York.
"To win the NRC team title is a huge honour and it is very prestigious to be ranked the number one team in America," said Cantwell. "It's a huge feat and we were so consistent from the start to the end. This was very important to the team and very important to the sponsors."

Goss has the goods on Farrar in sprint after 248km. I can barely stand after 248km.
Tasmanian (aren't they all?) Matt Goss has won the sprint for 1st place at the GP Ouest in Plouay, won last year by Victorian Simon Gerrans (see, they aren't all Taswegians). A lot of big names were behind Goss, including Farrar and Ballan. It certainly send s a clear message to Aussie selectors, doesn't it?

Crawford takes final Utah stage for Fly V, Bobridge grabs first pro stage win in Holland
Nice stage win for Jai Crawford against some top climbers. However Leipheimer winning overall despite not having a team in support speaks volumes as well.
Meanwhile at the Eneco tour Jack Bobridge slipped clear of his breakaway companions to win alone. Prior to this stage he looked like he was struggling at times, but perhaps he just needed to get into the right break at the right time. He and the breakaway were aided by a lacklustre chase by the main bunch which seemingly mistimed the catch. OTOH Bobridge made the right move with 2km to go and refused to be caught. It must be a confidence booster.

Neil Stephens on that stage into Spa and Schleck's "mechanical"
It's worth a read - the whole interview, I mean - but Neil's response on 'grinta' and mechanicals (especially when it was something like Schleck's ham-fisted gear change) puts some perspective into things. (Which really means that I agree with him, that's all.)

PEZ: 'Grinta' - are the riders of today as tough as they were 25 years ago?
Neil Stephens: I tend to think that maybe they're not - I was disappointed with that stage to Spa in the Tour. If there was a crash on oil, ok, let the guys get back on but don't go on strike, don't annul the stage - what about the fans ? what about the stage town ? It just makes cycling look stupid.
And Schleck's chain coming off; that's racing - get on with it! Contador mixed the truth on that You Tube video, he didn't see that something had happened to Schleck but he didn't need to say anything. Any DS would have sent their man on the attack and left Schleck to it. Miguel Indurain would simply have said, 'bad luck' and that would have been that. What's refreshing is that not one DS criticized Contador - no DS would have said, 'wait.'

The hot streak continued for Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia) who uncorked a blazing burst of speed to claim the seventh Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium under the lights in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 28-year-old Australian won his eighth event in recent weeks, outsprinting Jacob Keough (UnitedHeathCare p/b Maxxis) and Patrick Bevin (Bissell Pro Cycling) from a 22-rider strong escape which formed late in the 50 mile criterium.
"I just came off the back of winning Superweek and Elk Grove. I'm on fire at the moment and I feel great," said Cantwell. "This is the eighth time I've won in the last two or three weeks, so I feel good. It's been an exciting year for Fly V Australia, we love racing here in America."

Renshaw happy to re-sign, hopes for more individual opportunities
A regular paycheck in a job he does very well, supporting a highly regarded road sprinter. Could be worse. It does tie him up until the end of 2012, by which time either he will remain in thrall with Cavendish or perhaps seek his independence. Let's hope it's the latter - the more sprinters in with a chance the better.

Renshaw Signs New Deal With HTC-Columbia | Cyclingnews.com
Mark Renshaw has signed a two-year contract extension with HTC-Columbia, committing himself to the team until the end of 2012. The Australian has been a hugely important element of sprinter Mark Cavendish's lead-out train over the past two seasons and it comes as no surprise that the team has rushed to secure his services for the foreseeable future.
"I'm happy to extend with the team," said Renshaw. "I know my role and I'm happy to commit to that and be part of a successful team."

Allan Davis maintains lead in Tour of Poland
It's been a sprinters' race so far (with 4 stages to go) and Allan Davis has been consistently placing. In the past the Tour of Poland has been won by the likes of Ballan, Voigt and Van Summeren - whilst not necessarily mountain goats (with the possible exception of Johan VS) they aren't traditional sprinters, either. And whilst Davis is certainly a sprinter he's not built like Greipel and can get over the climbs a bit easier. We shall see.

Time bonuses at the finish line allowed Astana sprinter Davis to take over the race lead from Italian Jacopo Guarnieri, the Liquigas sprinter who won the opening stage.
"I've had a great start in Tour of Poland, I am very satisfied. Today was a hard day, it was the longest stage of this Tour and the whole team has done a good work, Bazayev was impressive. The result is a reward for myself, but also for all the efforts of the team," said Davis.
"And I'm ready to fight to keep it, I feel in really good condition, it is the result of three weeks of intensive training in July, I worked hard and I feel good. I know the team is also ready to defend my position."

“We held the jersey for four of five days now and we worked really hard all week,” Sutherland said. “The guys did a phenomenal job and that is why I am proud to be on this team and proud that they are all my teammates. They died 10 times during the race. I felt very good today and every time your teammates do a turn on the front, you see their faces and ride a little bit better as well.”
Fly V Australia enjoyed strong performances from second placed overall Ben Day and Darren Lill who finished third. The eight-man squad won the event’s team classification along with the King of the Mountain, won by Lill and the best sprinter won by Jay Thomson.
